Columbus Bar Foundation Introduces New Judicial Legacy Fund

2020 was a year of hardship, worry and disappointment for so many due to the onset of a mass, global pandemic. With it came much loss, including some of Columbus’s finest jurists. To honor the legacy of both those who have passed away or stepped away from the bench, the Columbus Bar Foundation has announced the inception of its new Judicial Legacy Fund.

The Judicial Legacy Fund will accept gifts in memory of members of the judiciary upon their death or retirement from the bench, or to commemorate their significant service to the community. All donated funds will be used by the Foundation’s Board of Trustees to advance justice in central Ohio in ways not adequately supported by the current governmental funding of the court system. Additionally, this Fund will support numerous access to justice programs and racial equality initiatives that will better the lives of the vulnerable or marginalized members of our community.

This past year has certainly proved that needs and circumstances change over time – sometimes in very short order – and so, we have intentionally given this fund a very broad scope. This flexibility will allow us to support a vast network of different organizations across central Ohio and, additionally, seek input from the courts and judges about current, specific needs and projects. We hope that by expanding our scope beyond Franklin County and accepting gifts on behalf of judges throughout Central Ohio, we will be able to revitalize the Foundation’s funding and continue to provide assistance to worthwhile organizations that serve our community.

Some examples of programs that the Fund may be used to support include, but are not limited to: innovative programs at the courts; public civics education programs; academic studies about the judicial system; and hosting speakers who will enhance public understanding of the need for judicial independence and the rule of law.

It is the sincere hope of the entire Board of Trustees that our community, and particularly those of you who gained so much from your association with these judges, will help raise $20,000.00 to launch this new Fund in their honor. It would be a truly meaningful way to give back to these judges who have tirelessly dedicated their lives to serving the bench and bar of central Ohio.
