What to Bring to Your Appointment

Please be sure to bring the following items with you:

  • A valid government-issued photo ID
  • The ORC number corresponding to your background check

Please note: Background checks cannot be processed without an ORC number. For notary applicants, this code will be “147.022 – Applicant for a Notary Commission”. For all other purposes, please reference the ORC numbering documents and confirm this information with the agency, employer, or licensing board requiring your background check prior to your appointment. The CBA is unable to advise applicants of which code to use. No refunds will be issued due to an incorrect ORC code being used.

Background Check FAQs

How do I know whether I need a BCI or an FBI background check?

For notary applicants, only a BCI background check will be required. All other applicants should defer to the requirements of the agency, employer, or licensing board requesting their background check.

I’m obtaining a background check for my notary application. Where do I need to send the results?

BCI background check results for notary applicants should generally be mailed directly back to your address, as they will need to be included in your application to the Ohio Secretary of State. Please enter this address as the direct copy option at the time of your appointment.

I have previously obtained a background check for a different purpose. Can I use these results to obtain my notary commission?

The Ohio Secretary of State mandates that all notary applicants provide BCI background check results dated within the last 6 months with the notary-specific ORC number of 147.022. If this code was not included, or if results are dated over 6 months ago, a new background check will need to be obtained.

How do I determine which Ohio Revised Code number my background check falls under?

For notary applicants, this code will be “147.022 – Applicant for a Notary Commission”. For all other applicants, please defer to the requirements of the agency, employer, or licensing board requesting your background check. Selecting the incorrect ORC code can potentially make your background check results invalid. We do not have the authority to determine which code is most appropriate, and knowledge of your ORC code is required at the time of your appointment.

What do I need to bring to my background check appointment?

Please be prepared to provide a government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, state ID card, passport, etc.) at the time of your background check appointment. You will also need knowledge of your social security number and ORC number.

It has been over 6 weeks since my appointment, and I haven’t received my results yet. What do I do?

Results can take up to 2 – 6 weeks to be delivered to the address requested at the time of your appointment. If this timeframe has passed and you have not yet received your background check results, you will need to contact BCI directly to get your results re-delivered. Their office can be reached at (740) 845 – 2000 or via email at BCI@OhioAttorneyGeneral.gov.

I received a letter stating that my fingerprints were rejected due to poor quality. What do I do?

If BCI/FBI was unable to process your fingerprints, you will need to submit a new set of fingerprints in order to obtain your results. Please schedule another background check appointment, and be prepared to provide the rejection letter from BCI/FBI. Please note: Individuals whose prints are rejected with electronic fingerprinting typically experience higher-quality results by obtaining a background check with ink fingerprinting. We do not offer ink fingerprinting at the CBA; please reference a searchable database of WebCheck providers here for other options.
