Why the CBA Exists: Our Mission to Safeguard and Enhance Our Profession & Community

For over 150 years, the Columbus Bar Association has stood behind one simple but essential mission: to support a strong, vibrant legal community in Central Ohio.

The strength of a local bar association isn’t measured just by the programs it runs or the CLEs it offers. It’s measured by the health of the community it helps sustain — by how effectively it brings legal professionals together, provides them with the tools to thrive, and stands up for the values that define our profession.

What We Do — and Why It Matters

CBA membership is more than a subscription. It’s a commitment to maintaining a legal system rooted in integrity, excellence, and access to justice. Our work falls into three critical areas:

1. Education & Resources

The CBA provides ongoing legal education, mentorship, practice groups, and guidance to support attorneys at every stage of their career. From law students to seasoned litigators, we deliver the tools that help professionals serve their clients with confidence and skill.

2. Professional Standards & Ethics

Behind the scenes, the CBA plays a critical role in upholding the ethical foundation of the profession. Our attorney ethics reviews and judicial screening committees work to ensure that legal professionals and the judiciary meet the standards our community expects and deserves.

3. Advocacy & Inclusion

The CBA actively works to build a legal profession that reflects and serves our diverse community. Through programs like our Minority Clerkship Program and Young Lawyers initiatives, we’re helping cultivate the next generation of attorneys and ensure that opportunity is accessible to all.

Every Dollar Stays Local

When you support the CBA — whether through membership, events, or CLEs — you’re directly investing in Central Ohio. Every dollar spent with the CBA is reinvested into the local legal community. That means more scholarships for students, more resources for practitioners, more advocacy for ethical standards, and more initiatives that promote equity and professionalism throughout our region.

We don’t outsource our mission — we live it, right here at home.

A Community Built on Commitment

None of this happens without the support of our members. When you join the CBA, you’re not just adding another line to your resume — you’re standing with an organization that is working, every day, to make the Central Ohio legal community stronger. You’re backing initiatives that don’t always make headlines but make all the difference in protecting the quality and integrity of our profession.

Our mission is simple, but it’s never been more important. The Columbus legal community is growing and changing, and the CBA exists to help it grow stronger — not just for attorneys, but for the public we all serve.
