Columbus Attorney Susan Donofrio Recognized for Leadership and Advocacy

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Sept. 14, 2026) – Attorney Susan Donofrio is the 2026 recipient of the Ohio Access to Justice Foundation Denis J. Murphy Award. The Foundation presents the Murphy Award annually to recognize outstanding leadership and advocacy within Ohio’s legal aids.

Throughout her 46-year career at Legal Aid of Southeast and Central Ohio (LASCO), Donofrio has helped countless low-income clients with civil legal issues related to domestic violence, divorce, custody issues, and child support. She has an unwavering commitment to justice and a steadfast dedication to securing the best outcomes for her clients.

Donofrio was one of the first attorneys in Ohio, and the first in civil legal services, to become a certified specialist in Family Law. In the legal community, Susan is known for her collaborative spirit and willingness to share her expertise. She’s served for decades in various capacities on the Ohio State Bar Association Family Law Committee and as a mentor for LASCO’s pro bono programs. Her colleagues at LASCO describe her as highly collaborative, a leader who is both a mentor to attorneys, paralegals, administrative staff, and volunteers, as well as a person who deeply values others’ input and ideas.

“Susan has not only achieved incredible individual accomplishments as a family law specialist, but she has provided decades of mentorship to new lawyers while ensuring that the legal rights of people in poverty remain at the forefront,” said Kate McGarvey, executive director of Legal Aid of Southeast and Central Ohio.

Donofrio’s remarkable career combines everything she loves: teaching, learning, practicing the law, and helping people solve real problems.

“Susan’s exceptional commitment and leadership within Legal Aid of Southeast and Central Ohio has been instrumental in helping Ohioans secure access to justice,” said Angie Lloyd, the Foundation’s executive director. “We’re thrilled to honor her with the Denis J. Murphy Award.”

The Ohio Access to Justice Foundation ensures that Ohioans who are low-income or who lack access can fully and fairly participate in civil systems that produce just outcomes. Established in 1994, the Foundation funds Ohio’s legal aids and other access to justice initiatives through the IOLTA/IOTA program, a civil filing fee surcharge, and donations. Through the Foundation’s work, Ohioans have access to legal help, information, and representation, which ensures fairness for all in the justice system.
