2017 Summer Associate Legal Research Seminar
Legal Research and Professional Skills to Help You Maximize Your Summer Experience

The Legal Research and Information Resources Committee will present its 2017 Summer Associate Legal Research Seminar, Legal Research and Professional Skills to Help You Maximize Your Summer Experience, on Friday, June 2nd, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Columbus Bar Association.  Don’t miss this opportunity for free instruction for first- or second-year law students who are summer associates at law firms, courts, or government offices in Columbus.  Although there is no cost for the seminar, registration is required by May 26.  Contact Kristen Hallows at (614) 227-4967 or khallows@bricker.com for registration information.

This year’s seminar will feature welcoming remarks from Brigid Heid, President of the Columbus Bar Association, followed by a session on legal writing by Jennifer Edwards, an attorney at BakerHostetler.  Breakout sessions with concurrent programs designed to enhance the legal research skills of the students will follow.  Offerings include Ohio legislative history, Ohio citations, cases, and court rules, and use of secondary resources.  Another choice will be a panel of select staff members from other organizational areas (including a library director, a practice development specialist, a litigation paralegal, and a legal secretary) whose objective is to provide strategies for working with support staff in the office.

Following the breakout sessions, panels of practicing attorneys will share their insights on working and succeeding in the real world.  The students can choose to attend a panel with attorneys in the private sector or with government agencies and courts.

The seminar will conclude with a collaborative session titled Interactive Exploration of Diversity in Society.  This exercise will challenge participants’ ideas and perceptions of the people encountered throughout one’s professional journey.
