Program Overview:

Criminal Consequences of Opiate Over-Prescription

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, physicians in the United States wrote over 190,000,000 prescriptions for opioid painkillers. Approximately 19,000 deaths were linked to those prescriptions.  In America alone, in excess of 40 deaths a day result from painkiller overdoses.

California physician Dr. Lisa Tseng was recently convicted and sentenced to prison in connection with three deaths that resulted from her systematic over-prescription of painkillers.

This program will examine all aspects and examine all sides of this epidemic.  Instructors will address how to identify signs of potential abuse; how to proactively advise the prescribing client or entity; how to defend those charged with drug abuse; and how family lives are impacted by the myriad of tragedies that can occur as a result of prescription opioid use.

Making a special guest appearance is Wayne Campbell, whose compelling personal story led him to form Tyler’s Light, a drug awareness, prevention and support organization whose vision is to reduce the loss of life due to drug addiction.  Both the organization and the story of the loss of Tyler Campbell to prescription drug overdose was recently featured on CBS’ 60 Minutes.
