Columbus firms featured on cover of national diversity magazine

In June, representatives from firms who comprise the Managing Partners Diversity Initiative gathered at the steps of the Supreme Court of Ohio for a photo shoot. Diversity & the Bar, a leading national diversity publication produced by the Minority Corporate Counsel, featured our city on its July/August 2005 cover. The caption read, “Diversity in the Heartland: A Look at Efforts in Columbus, Ohio.”

Veta Richardson, Executive Director of the Minority Corporate Counsel, travels extensively talking to attorneys from firms and corporations about diversity. In 2004 she made over 39 trips, giving her a birds-eye view of diversity in the legal profession. Lawyers of firms of all sizes have shared a primary challenge of recruiting diverse talent outside major urban cities like New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Washington, DC.

In her editorial in the July/August issue, she tells others not to take this challenge as an excuse for not trying and then points out, “One stand out effort is a program that’s underway in one of America’s heartland cities, Columbus, Ohio. I believe our readers will be inspired after taking a closer look at what they have been doing … and undertake similar efforts in their local communities.”
