Capital and OSU law students of color explore judicial clerkships

Two judges, a court clerk and an associate from a large law firm spoke to forty-five students of color from Capital Law School and Ohio State’s Moritz College of Law about the benefits of serving in judicial clerkships at all levels of government. The evening was an overwhelming success according to all who attended. Students said, “This is so nice of the bar association to do this for us,” and “I learned so much tonight about clerkships – I never knew what they could mean for me!”

Sharlene I. Chance from the Tenth District Court of Appeals, Hon. Algenon L. Marbley from the United States District Court, Hon. Carla D. Moore from the Akron Municipal Court and William W. Patmon III from Jones Day comprised the panel that spoke to the students about the role of clerks within their courtrooms or from the perspective of having been clerks. Many students were not aware of the career opportunities available to them after serving as a judicial clerk. Even though delicious hors d’oeuvres were served in a reception after the question and answer period, everyone was slow getting to them because the students inundated the panel members with personal questions about their career development. Judge Carla D. Moore from Akron Municipal Court captured the sentiment of all the panelists when she said, “I had a wonderful time talking to and counseling the students.”

Amee R. McKim, Assistant Dean of Professional Development at OSU, and Alison D.P. Sikora, Director of Career Services at Capital, collaborated with Annette Hudson-Clay, Columbus Bar Diversity Director, and Donna Sweet, Columbus Bar Director of CLE and Committees, to sponsor the event.
