Summer Associate Seminar 2014

"Legal Research for a Successful Summer"

The Legal Research and Information Resources Committee will present its Summer Associate Seminar on Friday, May 30, 8:30am to 2:45pm at the Columbus Bar (175 S. 3rd St.). This is an opportunity for free instruction for first or second-year law students who are summer associates at law firms, courts, or government offices. Although there is no cost for the seminar, registration is required by May 23. Contact Jonathan Chagat at (614) 387-0534 or jonathan.chagat@ohioattorneygeneral.gov for registration information.

This year’s seminar features Alexandra T. Schimmer from the Ohio State University Office of Legal Affairs presenting “Keys to a Successful Experience as a Summer Associate and Lawyer,” followed by a session on legal writing by Jennifer Edwards, an attorney at Baker Hostetler. Breakout sessions with concurrent programs designed to enhance the legal research skills of the students will follow. Offerings include Ohio legislative history, Ohio citations, cases, and court rules, and use of secondary resources. Other choices are strategies for working with support staff in the office, and networking your way to an offer.

Following the breakout sessions, panels of practicing attorneys will share their insights on working and succeeding in the real world. Students can choose to attend a panel with attorneys from law firms or from government agencies and courts.

The seminar concludes with a session on cultural competency presented by Neal Semel of Diversity Matters. Mr. Semel’s presentation is offered through the generous support of the Managing Partners Diversity Initiative.
