Bankruptcy Law Institute: May 1-2, 2014

Behind the scenes of the annual Bankruptcy Law Institute set to take place at the Columbus Bar on May 1-2 is a planning committee of experts who have been designing the program to offer a variety of compelling topics.

Committee chair Jim Coutinho, (Strip Hoppers Leithart McGrath & Terlecky) leads the team that includes Adam Biehl (Bailey Cavalieri); J. Matthew Fisher (Allen Kuehnle Stovall & Neuman); Kathy Granger (Granger Law); Karen Hamilton, (Law Firm of Karen E. Hamilton); Athena Inembolidis (Attorney at Law); Pam Maggied (Pamela N. Maggied Co.); Laura M Nesbitt (Jump Legal Group) and MaryAnne Wilsbacher (Asst. U.S. Trustee, U.S. Dept. of Justice, Office of U.S. Trustee).

The agenda will include the traditional local and national case law update, animals and bankruptcy, bankruptcy crimes, the impact of the Supreme Court DOMA decision and representation of LGBT clients, military issues, Detroit – the nation’s largest municipal bankruptcy, post-discharge mortgage issues and litigation skills regarding the Rules of Civil Procedure.

Breakout sessions will also be provided along commercial and consumer tracts. The commercial sessions will include Chapter 11 issues such as the duties of counsel for a DIP as fiduciary and responsibilities to the estate as well as a fact pattern and walkthrough. The consumer sessions will include exemption planning and the trustee’s search for assets; considerations in conversations between chapters; Chapter 20; the scope of the automatic stay; and the debtor as a landlord or tenant.
