Civil War Group Meeting

Steve Ball, a musician and historian from Columbus will be the guest presenter at the Civil War Group meeting on Friday, November 30, noon to 1:00pm at the Columbus Bar.

Steve started both playing the guitar and studying the American Civil War at the age of twelve. Over the years, he has developed an interest in older styles of American music and has performed in folk groups, bluegrass and country, square dance bands, and even a Western trio.

His interest in Civil War music was generated by tunes he learned while in the western trio, and eventually he built a repertoire of songs from the 19th century, both before and during the Civil War period (1861 to 1865). His interest in the history of the war led to learning about the composers and the events that inspired many of the period songs.

For the meeting, his presentation will begin in 1856 with a popular tune written here in central Ohio. In chronological order, Steve will perform tunes related to and inspired by the Civil War. These include both Union and Confederate patriotic songs, love songs, silly songs, and of course, sad songs. He will give the background of each tune, and at the same time tell the listeners what is happening in the war.
