Raenell Nagel (view ColumbusLawyerFinder.com profile)

Why did you decide to become an attorney?
I grew up in southern Ohio in a family with a long tradition of working in law enforcement, local government and politics, and other public service. I learned that there was no more noble calling than pursuing a career where I could help people improve their lives and communities and receive equitable and just treatment under the law. Now in private practice, I am thrilled to use my knowledge and experience to advocate for individuals and families as they plan for secure futures and navigate the legal system.

What experiences (work and personal) help you to be a better attorney?
A major influence in my life and work are the people I have been fortunate to get to know. I grew up in Portsmouth, in southern Ohio. As an adult, I have lived in Washington DC, Boston, New York City; and now Columbus. These very different cities have exposed me to people from many nations, cultures, and traditions. This provides me, as an attorney, with a rare ability to understand the individual perspectives and needs of my clients and to tailor legal solutions to their experiences and goals. I really enjoy getting to know my clients so that I can provide creative and effective results for them.

What made you choose your primary area of law?
I carefully chose my areas of practice to reflect my passion for advocacy. Estate planning and elder law, family law, and nonprofit law all allow me to use the knowledge and skills I have gained and to draw upon my personal values to provide the best possible result for my clients. I have a particular interest in making the law accessible for people who have particular legal needs – such as families planning for a family member with special needs, families navigating the elder care system, young professionals, and non-traditional families – single parent households, grandparents raising grandchildren, blended families, LGBT families, and more.

What makes your law firm unique?
The attorneys at Nagel, Maki, & Dougherty offer diverse life and work experiences that allow us to relate to and effectively represent a wide range of clients. As a firm, we strive to provide efficient and best quality legal services to our clients. This means using technology and other tools to deliver services conveniently, cost-effectively, and transparently. It also means that our most important client is every one of our clients. Your legal matter is important to you, and so it is equally important to us. We provide prompt and individualized attention and effective communication to each of our clients.

Describe your personal interests and hobbies.
I enjoy a range of personal interests, including spending time with my family and friends, photography and film, cooking, and traveling. In particular, I enjoy sightseeing in my own backyard – taking advantage of all the experiences and events offered both in Columbus and throughout our state. Favorite family activities include museum days, the Dublin Irish Festival, and enjoying our Metro Parks.

Describe your charitable activities.
I take to heart an attorney's commitment to pro bono work, and commit as much of my time as possible to helping people and organizations that otherwise would have difficulty accessing legal services. I also strive to be an engaged citizen through volunteer political activities, animal rescue, and fundraising for a variety of health and environmental charities.
