Tidball and Stratton Win by Attending New Lawyer Committee Events
After months of events and entries, the suspense is finally over: Audra Tidball, pictured with New Lawyers Committee Co-Chairs Laura Hartnett and Christy Prince, is the winner of a new iPad. Audra was randomly selected from a group of well over 100 entries obtained from attendance at New Lawyer events held in the Fall of 2012.
While the iPad was awarded by random draw, the Bar did not want to overlook the fact that one member, Ben Stratton, attended every single committee event held during the months of September, October, November and December. In appreciation of Ben’s commitment to the Association, he will be presented with a prize package that includes a Starbuck’s gift card, a certificate for 50% off membership dues for the 2013-2014 year, and a Columbus Bar polo shirt.
With the iPad drawing in the rear view mirror, the committee is moving forward with an active 2013 calendar that offers something for everyone. Upcoming events include:
January 15 – Monthly Meeting, Noon at the CBA
Mortgages, Student Loans, and Savings: Oh My! Financial experts from Huntington Bank will discuss how to address finances as a young professional. Many young lawyers are lost between student loan payments, mortgages (or whether to have a mortgage), saving for retirement, and how to juggle all of these. This session walk attendees through best strategies and options to address these and other financial hurdles.
February 7 – Networking Breakfast, 7:30 am at First Watch
February 19 – Monthly Meeting, Noon at the CBA

March 7 – Happy Hour, 5:30 to 7:00 pm at Bar Louie in the Arena District
March date TBD – Judges’ Lunch with New Lawyers
April 3 – 6:00-8:00 pm

April 4 – Networking Breakfast, 7:30 am at First Watch
April 16 -- Monthly Meeting, Noon at the CBA
May 2 – Happy Hour, 5:30 to 7:00 pm at Bar Louie in the Arena District
In addition, the committee is planning a Networking Night at the Columbus Blue Jackets and a summer outing with the Columbus Clippers. Dates and times are in the works, but more information will be available soon.
If community service is your passion, the committee also needs volunteers to assist with the Street Legal Program as it expands to the Ohio School for the Deaf and a local charter school. The program educates kids about their rights and responsibilities as citizens. Curriculum covers the gamut of criminal law topics, housing law, and employment law. The kids are bright and vivacious, and have no shortage of questions. On a recent evening, the volunteers addressed dog fights, the consequences of a felony conviction, mail fraud, and employment rights. Street Legal requires a commitment of as little as one night for one and 1/2 hours and is a very rewarding experience.
Finally, for the athletes in the group, softball will return this spring. The committee team, Hits & Runs, will be looking to add players to the roster - - all skill levels welcome.
