All About Supreme Court Rule 88

Columbus Bar Interpreting Services (CBIS)
Columbus Bar Interpreting Services is a resource for area courts, attorneys, and other law-related agencies in need of certified and provisionally certified court interpreters available to provide professional, dependable interpreting and translation services.

CBIS, newest of the association’s initiatives, is established to help the legal community comply with Supreme Court of Ohio Rule 88 (effective January 1, 2013). The new rule requires that a Supreme Court of Ohio certified court interpreter be appointed whenever a party to or witness in a legal proceeding cannot readily understand or communicate because of a hearing, speech, or other impairment.

In addition to providing interpreting services, CBIS will monitor the Supreme Court’s requirements for Continuing Education for Certified Interpreters and to begin developing programs that meet those requirements. The Columbus Bar Court Interpreter will also monitor the ongoing interpretation needs of the local courts in order to determine how the CBA can more effectively meet those needs.

For more information, or to schedule an interpreter for a hearing or deposition, contact Shirley Coressel (Shirley@cbalaw.org/614.340.2075).
