Remembering the Honorable Dana Deshler

~ written by Adam Rinehart (and others, Grier Schafer, Brian Rigg and Andy Avellano)

When several former employees and friends sat down to pay tribute to our friend and former boss the Honorable Dana A. Deshler, laughter and good stories were the order of the evening. After much consideration we arrived at these few but cherished thoughts of a man we all loved and respected.

Dana Deshler was raised in the Hilltop area of Columbus, graduating from West High School. Recruited by Woody Hayes to play football, he graduated from The Ohio State University. Seeking a career in law, Judge Deshler attended Franklin University Law School, graduating and passing the Ohio Bar in 1966. Dana and his wife, Carol, moved to Upper Arlington where he and Carol raised their three boys.

Dana served his district in the Ohio House of Representatives. After leaving the House, a stint in private practice prepared him for his service on the Franklin County Common Pleas Bench and the 10th District Court of Appeals. He was also given opportunity to serve by assignment on the Ohio Supreme Court.

A friend too many and a mentor to a lucky few, he loved his fellow man. Dana served his community in many ways. He was always looking to payback. Through his work with the Charity Newsies, where he served as President, many families were helped. He was a devoted Husband, Father, Grandfather. At the end of his life his illness didn’t diminish his light, he still loved a good joke, a deep laugh and the company of his family and closest friends. Judge, you will be missed.
