Jeffrey Swick (view ColumbusLawyerFinder.com profile)
Why did you decide to become an attorney?
I think my early influence was Perry Mason. From an early age I was attracted to the idea of seeking the truth and defending the innocent. However, by the time I went to law school, I knew I didn't want to practice criminal law.
What experiences (work and personal) help you to be a better attorney?
I grew up in a small steel mill town in Western Pennsylvania and worked in the steel mill during my summers in college and law school. I have never forgotten how hard people have to work for their money. I always keep an eye on the bottom line for my client, and try to produce the best results at the lowest cost.
What made you choose your primary area of law?
In the mid 80's I went from a position with an oil and gas trade association to private practice at a time when oil and gas prices had dropped significantly, and the industry was shrinking. With the decline of the industry, suddenly lawsuits involving securities law, contract disputes, environmental and landowner claims and bankruptcy were rampant. I went from being an oil and gas attorney to being a litigator handling lawsuits involving oil and gas subject matter. From there I went into other types of commercial litigation.
What makes your law firm unique?
Experience. Between the four attorneys in this law firm, we have over 120 years of experience. No client's legal matter is going to be shuffled off to an inexperienced attorney.
Describe your ideal client.
The ideal client is one who strikes a balance between being engaged in the litigation and unnecessarily adding to the cost of the litigation. I like for my clients to be engaged by providing necessary information, assisting in the discovery process, and educating me on the facts of the case and their business. However, it is also important to realize that unnecessary phone calls and emails with an attorney may distract from the work that needs to be done, and add to the cost of litigation.
Describe your personal interests and hobbies.
I am an avid music lover. I like almost all kinds of music. I enjoy listening to my large collection of record, CD and digital music at home, and going to concerts. I also engage in various fitness activities.
Describe your charitable activities.
I have participated through my church to provide temporary food and shelter for homeless families. I also participate in a number of fund raising activities for various charities. Lately, I have been more focused on helping individuals with the various challenges they face.
