inc Mentoring Program: Chris Hogan

Attorney Chris Hogan is a 1998 graduate of the Mortiz College of Law. His practice focuses on business and labor and employment law as well as human resources consulting. Chris has been a mentor since the inception of the Columbus Bar inc Professional Development Center. He was led to become a mentor because he has personally benefitted greatly from mentors throughout his career. Throughout this career, Chris has learned many valuable lessons that he willingly shares with new attorneys. One of his most frequent pieces of advice is to remember that like is about process and people. It is important for lawyers to focus on the people they serve and not to take shortcuts.

Chris observed the increased number of new lawyers entering the solo and small firm practice due to the downturn in legal hiring. Chris understands this increases the difficulty new attorneys experience in accessing support networks. He acknowledges that new solo attorneys will not likely have malpractice insurance, a tickler system, or colleagues that can offer wisdom or perspective. “The inc program addresses needs in a targeted, high impact fashion. By helping young lawyers develop properly we protect our profession’s image and the quality of the practice.”

Chris attributes the success of inc to the high quality of the participant attorneys and the support of a capable CBA staff. He would like to see the program grow and offer more general support to new practitioners. “In my view, this is a case where investing in targeted, high-impact investments benefits the membership as a whole and, indeed, the community at large, all of whom benefit from the addition of an many properly developed and supported lawyers as possible.” Chris believes the new attorneys who participate in inc will positively impact their peers by sharing their experiences from the program.

When Chris is not busy with the business of law and mentoring, he can be found participating in the CBA Long Range Planning Committee or writing and speaking on various law and business related topics.
