Law and Leadership Institute Summer Program
A mock trial was conducted in a courtroom at the Ohio Supreme Court. The participants were rising 9th graders, students who had not yet set a foot in a high school classroom. Nonetheless, after five weeks of immersion in criminal law and procedure, with guidance provided by law student teachers in a law school classroom, these almost 9th graders argued, objected, cross-examined and handled themselves with poise and professionalism.
LLI President Carl Smallwood, reporting the event: “I am incredibly proud of the hard work many people put in this summer. With 155 9th graders statewide, similar LLI events took place in Cleveland, Akron, Toledo, Dayton and Cincinnati yesterday. We now have 383 students in four classes, with the rising seniors poised to begin their final year of high school.”
