An Interview with Columbus Bar inc Attorney, Micaela Deming

Micaela Deming is a 2010 graduate, OSU Moritz College of Law, one of the six new attorneys with shingles out at Suite 1050 – home of Columbus Bar incubator program. Here is insider information.

Why did you decide to be a solo attorney participating in Columbus Bar inc?
The view from the office is spectacular and I want to learn the ropes from the pros! I am particularly looking forward to having an onsite mentor as I take on the world - fifteen cases at a time.

What area(s) of law does your solo practice focus on?
Mostly Domestic, but I will expand to meet the wide variety of legal needs that survivors have.

What made you choose your primary area of law?
The most pressing need for my clients is usually a protection order, a divorce, or custody of their children for immediate and long-term safety.

What will make your law firm unique?
I have been an advocate for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking for quite some time now. In the past year at the Domestic Violence Unit of the City Prosecutor’s Office, I noticed just how often I told survivors that they really needed an attorney, only to have them come back to me and say they couldn’t find one. I realized that I was the attorney they needed. I understand the dynamics of interpersonal violence, and I am willing and able to set affordable fees.

Summary of previous employment.
I have been a volunteer for the Sexual Assault Response Network of Central Ohio for the past four years (and counting); legal advocate for the Columbus City Prosecutor’s Office Domestic Violence Unit (2009-2011); and a case manager for the Ohio Hispanic Coalition, (OSLSA) summer intern (2008).

Personal interests and hobbies?
I love to cook, read crime fiction, and play with my dogs.
