Here's to Compliance!

~ written by Bruce Campbell, Columbus Bar Counsel

Last week “Your Neighborhood Bar” (as Alex likes to call it) took another step forward, if a wobbly one, as a small group of volunteer barristers (including two members of a law school faculty) got potted on the premises. It was “Denny Crane Meets Jack Daniels Day” at the CBA.

Not to worry about plunging professional standards, however. All of this for pedagogic purposes, and the members of the control group made this sacrifice strictly for the enlightenment of the local legal community.

The occasion was a two-part CLE presentation on OVI (or OMVI as we old farts used to call it). The boozing was in aid of demonstrating the operation, merits and deficiencies of various gizmos used by the fuzz to differentiate between alcohol on the breath and garden-variety halitosis. The testers, sadly, had to be denied CLE credit because they were unable to fully focus the lectures (no good deed . . .). All were safely escorted home and pledged not to drive until legal.

The program was a sell-out. Cleve Johnson and the other organizers and presenters are to be congratulated for putting together a superb day of legal skills training. The event was videotaped and will be presented again on December 30 (albeit, without live libations).
