Summer Associates

The Legal Research and Information Resources Committee will present its 2009 Summer Associate Seminar, “Using Legal Research Skills To Survive & Thrive As A Summer Associate,” on Friday, May 22 , 8:30 a.m. to 2:20 p.m. and a shortened version of the seminar offered on Friday, June 5 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Both programs will be held at the Columbus Bar offices. Don’t miss this opportunity for free instruction for your first or second-year law students who are summer associates at law firms, courts, or government offices in Columbus.

This year’s full seminar will feature Shawn Beem, Associate Director for Career Services at Capital University Law School, giving practical tips on adapting to the business environment. Columbus law librarians will offer breakout sessions with concurrent programs designed to enhance the legal research skills of the students, focusing on Ohio legal research. In addition, effective legal writing and professional responsibility sessions will be presented by Jennifer Edwards, Porter Wright Morris & Arthur, and by Kent Shimeall of the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.

The seminar will conclude with panels of practicing attorneys who will share their insights on working and succeeding in the real world. Students can choose to attend a panel with attorneys from law firms or government agencies and courts. The program will include a continental breakfast sponsored by LexisNexis and a lunch provided by the Columbus Bar Managing Partners Diversity Initiative. The Minorities in the Law committee will present a program after lunch on Cultural Competence for Summer Associates with speaker Neal Semel of Diversity Matters.

The shortened version of the seminar, June 5, is available for students with start dates after May 22 or those unable to attend the May 22 event. This seminar is designed to familiarize students with Ohio legal research. Columbus law librarians are presenting two sessions: Ohio Statutes and Administrative Law; and Ohio Cases and Citation Formats.
