David Chakeres (profile)
Why did you decide to become an attorney?
I taught for three years in a Montessori school (and wanted to be a teacher in my younger years) but my late father always wished he could have been an attorney and he planted the seed of a legal career in my mind. In the early 70s, I became more interested while watching the Watergate hearings on television and being so impressed with the senators and lawyers. Finally, I attended Law Day at OSU in 1976 and was motivated by the attorneys who encouraged the audience to give law school a try. I applied and got in and the result has been a rewarding career.
What made you choose your primary area of law?
Through law school, I became interested in business law. Following school, I served for seven years as in-house counsel for my family's restaurant equipment supply/design and real estate business. The business included 30 Arthur Treacher's fast food restaurants in Ohio and Michigan and 18 in Arizona which gave me unique insight into the challenges of franchised business owners. When it was time to launch my own law practice, it was natural to turn my focus and experience to help my clients with their small business, franchise, and real estate law needs.
What makes your law firm unique?
I've now practiced law for thirty-one years as a sole practitioner and personal attention has been a hallmark of my practice. I ensure that it is easy for my clients to reach me and I always return their calls the same day or within 24 hours. My secretary, Sue, provides great support and allows me to give solid legal service and my full attention to my clients.
Describe your personal interests and hobbies.
My main personal interest is my wife and 20-year-old son. Over and above that, I'm a member of rock and roll band (Mourning Glory, formed with seven college buddies in 1966, at Wittenburg University in Springfield) and I love performing music live. I enjoy boating and have been restoring a 1968 boat for 10 years now and, lastly, I'm a news and history channel junkie.
Describe your charitable activities.
I'm a member of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Columbus. I volunteered to create two non-profit corporations for the church in connection with fundraising for the cathedral renovation and their annual maintenance support.
