Green Initiative: Cool, Clear Water

The next time you visit the Columbus Bar for a committee meeting, CLE program or special event, you will notice we no longer offer bottled water. In our continuing efforts to operate in a manner more environmentally friendly, we’ve eliminated bottled water and installed a new stainless steel water cooler located just outside the training room, near the Columbus Bar Foundation photo display.

The Pacific Institute, an independent think tank that specializes in development, environment and security, estimates that "the energy used for pumping and processing, transportation, and refrigeration, brings the annual fossil fuel footprint of bottled water consumption in the United States to more than 50 million barrels of oil, equivalent-enough to run 3 million cars for one year."

In addition, experts estimate that 88 percent of consumers do not recycle plastic bottles, meaning we are collectively dumping 40 million plastic water bottles a day and those bottles end up in a landfill.

We are pleased to be able to provide our members and guests with cold, filtered, great-tasting water while also doing our part to help the environment. Enjoy!

And, by the way, we’d like to hear about the things you are doing to “go green” both at home and in your firm. Send your tips, resource ideas and stories to donna@cbalaw.org and then watch our website and other Bar publications for more information on going green.
