WLFC To award scholarships

~ written by Christen Millard

Women Lawyers of Franklin County will honor its 2008 scholarship recipients at its Annual Meeting on Wednesday, May 21 at the Columbus Bar offices. Proceeds from a silent auction, opening at 11:30 a.m., will benefit the scholarship fund. Lunch and program begin at noon.

The Annual Meeting features a panel of past presidents who will combine to provide a comprehensive view of what the past presidents have gone on to accomplish. Those slated to appear are: Melissa Wilburn, Kristen Brown, Heather Sowald, Kim Shumate, Rosemary Pomeroy, Hon. Teresa Liston, Gretchen Mote, Cheryl Hacker, Emily Lewis and Barbara Roubanes. These past presidents have taken diverse paths and their experiences will prove interesting.

WLFC scholarship recipient Micaela Deming is pursuing a joint Master’s Degree in Women’s Studies from The Ohio State University with her JD from the Moritz College of Law. Ms. Deming has written extensively on the issues of human trafficking, the roles of women, and recovery from sexual assault. She currently serves as the President of the Women’s Legal Society at OSU and works with the Sexual Assault Response Network of Central Ohio as a Survivor Advocate. She was recently awarded the Outstanding Professional Student Award at the Moritz.

Recipient Shannon Mink is pursuing a JD through the Capital Law School’s evening program. On the Dean’s list each term she has been enrolled, Shannon is in the top ten percent of her class, a member of Law Review and serves as the Executive Articles and Business Editor. She has written on FMLA issues, which tend to impact women disparately. Ms. Mink is active on student boards and in the Women’s Law Association, in addition to school and full-time employment.

Please RSVP for the Annual Meeting to President Sue Kenney-Pfalzer at skplaw@sbcglobal.net. There is no charge for WLFC members. Visit www.wlfc.ws for a membership application.
