Local firm launches leadership program

Bricker & Eckler LLP and the Fisher College of Business at The Ohio State University have created an innovative lawyer training program called, “The Bricker & Eckler Leadership Development Program.”

As one outcome from a broad strategic planning process, the partnership of Bricker & Eckler recognized a need for leadership development. Bricker connected with the Executive Education program at Fisher to create a customized leadership development curriculum.

Dr. Anthony J. Rucci, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Management at the Fisher College, agrees. “Attorneys are taught many important skills in law school,” he noted. “They learn to discuss, debate, analyze, unbundle and resolve. They are not necessarily trained to become effective leaders or managers.”

“From a leadership development perspective, law firms need training in very specific areas,” Richard C. Simpson, managing partner at Bricker & Eckler, said. “Tony and his team understand this and tailored a program to meet our needs.”

Through a process overseen by the firm’s management in conjunction with the Fisher College, 25 of Bricker’s partners, representing various practice areas and levels of seniority, were selected to participate in the inaugural program. These partners are now participating in 11 classroom sessions (3.5 hours each) over the next six months at Fisher. Individual coaching for participants coupled with development planning are an important component of the curriculum. This unique leadership program will run from now until June 10.

Fisher’s Executive Education’s Custom program works directly with companies and firms like Bricker & Eckler to customize content and format of programs to target different levels of employees. Customized programs create a think-tank environment within the company that increases knowledge and sparks creativity to address the unique business needs within that company.

“The practice of law has changed in recent years,” Michael Holman said. “It’s now a business as much as a profession and the partners at Bricker & Eckler understand this.”

“Bricker’s partnership with Fisher is the only relationship of its kind with a law firm,” David Conrad added.
