Cashing In: Good Advice for Retirement
Consideration and planning for retirement is foremost on the minds of many attorneys as the Baby Boomers reach the age of cashing in on their practices and legal careers. Other attorneys consider making a change where they want to practice law, and some attorneys starting out wish to buy into a law practice. Where do you get good, practical advice for such a move? “Cashing In: What you need to know about the New Rules when buying or selling a law practice” consists of practical presentations and panel discussions on withdrawing from a firm, buying or selling a law practice and tax-wise ways for structuring these transactions.
This seminar scheduled for Thursday, October 25 from 9 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. for 3.0 CLE and CPA hours, including 1.0 ethics, features four speakers who will share their wealth of experience and expertise. Thomas J. Bonasera, Buckingham Doolittle & Burroughs, speaking about the ethics of buying out a partner, will discuss how the old game plan has changed due to the New Rules and what can and cannot be done in regard to retaining clients.
Richard D. Bringardner of Wiles Boyle Burkholder & Bringardner will discuss the ins-and-outs of selling a law practice, including how to prepare a practice for sale, notice requirements for buying/selling the practice, and more.
Laura B. Wojciechowski, CPA of Whalen & Company CPAs provides a practical hand-on approach to valuing a law practice and discusses tax-wise ways to structure these transactions.
Elbert R. Nester of Advisors Pension Services discusses the many tax-effective ways law practices can trade hands, including funding transactions with tax-deductible dollars, and overlooked ways to use qualified plans when buying or selling a law practice.
