Whom should we honor?

~ written by She'lia Bolding

There are unsung heroes in the Columbus legal community, and we want to recognize the “best of the best” for the good work they do. And we know you know who they are!

This is the time to step forward and help us recognize these good people and their good works. We hear many heart warming stories about our local attorneys’ dedicated service rendered on behalf of poor clients, who, but for them, would have gone without help.

The Columbus Bar and Bar Foundation will formally recognize these good Samaritans who have demonstrated a history of exceptional commitment to the poor and disadvantaged in Central Ohio. Those individuals and organizations publicly applauded for their commitment to pro bono legal services in 2006 at the annual Columbus Bar Foundation luncheon include: Danny Bank, Award for Outstanding Pro Bono Service by an Individual; Chester Willcox & Saxbe, Award for Outstanding Pro Bono Service by a Law Firm; The Homeless Project Volunteers, for Outstanding Pro Bono Service in a Project; and the Franklin County magistrates and staff for Outstanding Pro Bono Service in a Project.

Nominees should have a history of providing, facilitating, or encouraging the delivery of pro bono legal services to persons of limited means or to charitable, religious, civic, community, governmental and/or educational organizations in matters addressing the needs of those with limited financial resources or furtherance of the entity’s organizational purposes where the payment of standard legal fees would significantly deplete the organization’s economic resources or be otherwise inappropriate.

If you know of an attorney, law firm, corporate legal department, judge, pro bono program or project, or a government agency that has demonstrated exceptional pro bono service in the past year or has sustained commitment to providing, encouraging or facilitating pro bono service over the past several years, we encourage you to nominate them for an Outstanding Pro Bono Service Award.

Help us recognize those who generously provide legal services to the disadvantaged. Submit your nominations to Marion Smithberger at 614/340.2070 or marion@cbalaw.org by Friday, August 3.
