Attorney Registration Notice

Pursuant to Gov. Bar R. VI, attorneys admitted to and engaged in the practice of law in Ohio are required to register with the Supreme Court biennially. The 2007/2009 attorney registration biennium begins September 1, 2007, and runs through August 31, 2009.

In early July 2007, the Office of Attorney Registration & CLE will be mailing Certificates of Registration for the upcoming biennium to attorneys who are currently registered for active or corporate status. Completed Certificates of Registration will be due on or before September 1, 2007.

Attorneys who fail to register on or before September 1, 2007, will be assessed a late registration fee of $50. Any attorney who has not registered by December 1, 2007, will be suspended from the practice of law. A suspended attorney will be barred from practicing law until satisfying the registration requirements and paying all registration fees and a $300 reinstatement fee.

If you are not registered for the current biennium (2005/2007) and have been suspended from the practice of law for failing to register or if you have failed to register for a prior biennium, you should immediately contact the Office of Attorney Registration & CLE to obtain the necessary forms to come into compliance with Gov. Bar R. VI.

If you have moved since you last registered, be sure the Office of Attorney Registration & CLE has your most recent office and residence addresses so that your 2007/2009 Certificate of Registration will be mailed to the proper address. You may verify your addresses and make any changes on-line at www.supremecourtofohio.gov/ASW/ASWlogin.aspx or provide notice of your new address by using the Change of Information and Replacement Card Form at www.supremecourtofohio.gov/Atty_Reg/changeinfo.asp.

NEW in 2007

In accordance with amended Gov. Bar R. VI, Sec. 2, effective September 1, 2007, an attorney registered for inactive status will no longer be required to file a biennial Certificate of Registration. Accordingly, an attorney who is currently registered for inactive status will not be mailed a Certificate of Registration in July 2007 and will remain on inactive status until such time as the attorney wishes to change his or her status to active. An attorney who currently is registered for inactive status and who wishes to change his or her registration status for the 2007/2009 biennium should contact the Office of Attorney Registration & CLE.

Also effective September 1, 2007, attorneys age 65 or older will no longer be able to register for retired status. An attorney, regardless of age, may register for inactive status or elect to retire permanently from the practice of law. Attorneys currently registered for retired status may remain in that status on or after September 1, 2007.
