Attorney general to speak at Columbus Bar

~ written by John H. Jones, Government Agencies Committee Chair

Ohio Attorney General Marc Dann will be the guest speaker for the April 11 Government Agencies committee meeting at noon at the Columbus Bar offices. Cracking down on predatory lenders will be the topic of his speech.

Dann is hoping to stop fraud in the lending industry and to head off a looming crisis of home foreclosures caused by unscrupulous lending practices. Last year, the General Assembly passed S.B. 185, the Ohio Homebuyers’ Protection Act, which expanded the Consumer Sales Practices Act (CSPA) by establishing new consumer protections for certain mortgage loans and provided a consumer, who is harmed by a violation of the new law, with all the rights, actions and remedies available under the CSPA. The new law gives the attorney general enforcement authority over abusive lending practices committed by loan officers, mortgage brokers, or non-bank lenders.

Before taking the oath of office as attorney general on January 8, 2007, Dann served in the Ohio Senate, representing the 32nd District since 2002. Dann began his public service as a member of the Liberty Local Schools Board of Education. He also maintained a private law practice in the Mahoning Valley and received his bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Michigan and law degree from Case Western Reserve University.
