Back to the basics on DUI law
Everything you ever wanted to know about defending a DUI case will be offered by the video replay of “Basic DUI - from Start to Finish” on Thursday, March 22 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for 3.25 hours of credit, including 0.5 substance abuse. This basic overview of DUI representation for new criminal lawyers, attorneys who do not exclusively practice criminal law or for other practitioners interested in DUI representation was produced by the Municipal Court committee.
Jon J. Saia and Dominic L. Mango of Saia & Piatt will talk about the initial DUI representation including the interview process, the five-day hearing, ALS appeal/hearing, pre-trial discovery/investigation, and the motion hearing. They will also educate you on all aspects of trying a DUI case, taking you through voir dire, the opening statement, cross-examination techniques, obtaining expert witnesses, and closing remarks.
Another component of DUI representation included in this seminar is in-depth examination of substance abuse to promote understanding of the problem behind DUI. Megan Robertson of the Ohio Lawyers Assistance Program will cover all aspects of the addiction problem associated with DUI including definitions of addiction; primary classification of substances; the disease concept of addiction; treatment objectives, avoiding treatment and promoting recovery; and OLAP’s support system for lawyers.
