Research boot camp: strategic approach to success

The Legal Research and Information Resources Committee will present its 2006 Summer Associate Seminar, “Research Boot Camp: Strategic Approach to Success,” on Friday, May 26, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at the Columbus Bar offices. Don’t miss this opportunity for free instruction for your first or second-year law students who are summer associates at law firms, courts or government offices in Columbus.

This year’s seminar will feature Jennifer Edwards, an attorney from Porter Wright Morris & Arthur with experience in both teaching and writing legal memoranda. Based on comments from area law firms and past attendees of the seminar, the committee believes that effective legal writing is one of the most needed skills for being successful as a summer associate. Deborah Thomas-Nininger, a professional speaker on business etiquette, will follow with practical suggestions to help students to adapt to the business environment.

Law librarians will present breakout sessions designed to enhance the legal research skills of the students, focusing on Ohio legal research. In addition, the Assistant Director for Career Services at Capital University will offer tips on how to get an offer, based on feedback he has received from law firms and government agencies.

The seminar will conclude with panels of practicing attorneys, who will share their thoughts on practicing and succeeding in the real world. The students can choose to attend a panel with attorneys from large law firms, small law firms or government agencies and courts. The program will include a continental breakfast sponsored by LexisNexis and a lunch sponsored by Thomson-West.

There is no charge to attend this seminar; however, because of the format, pre-registration is required. Registration forms are available in the forms & documents section of www.cbalaw.org. Completed forms should be mailed to Judy Rodgers, Librarian, Baker & Hostetler, 65 East State Street, Suite 2100, Columbus, OH 43215-4260 by May 22.
