New lawyers roll a strike for Children’s Hospital

~ written by David Riepenhoff, Downes Hurst & Fishel

Many new lawyers have dreamed of life on the professional bowler's circuit. Unfortunately, with all the researching, writing and arguing in court, few of us can find the time to practice our bowling skills.

On Saturday, Feb. 18 at 11:30 a.m., you can throw gutter balls and still roll a strike for Children's Hospital during the sixteenth annual Rock 'N Bowl at Sawmill Lanes. Organized by the Children's Hospital Development Board and co-sponsored by the Columbus Bar Foundation and other community partners, Rock 'N Bowl is an event benefiting the Center for Child and Family Advocacy. The Center is a partnership between the Columbus Children's Hospital and the Columbus Coalition Against Family Violence. Led by its president, former Common Pleas Court Judge Yvette McGee Brown, the Center is dedicated to the treatment and prevention of child abuse and domestic violence.

Last February, members of the Central Ohio community raised over $75,000 for the Center during Rock 'N Bowl. For the first time, planners created an additional session to accommodate the high numbers of participants. Of this crowd, nearly one hundred lawyers teamed up to help make the 2005 event the most successful one yet. This year, the New Lawyers committee plans to fill the entire bowling alley at the 11:30 a.m. session.

As a new lawyer, and as the Children's Hospital Development Board's co-chair for the event, I am excited to see another outstanding effort from Central Ohio legal community in support of Children's. Our goal is to raise $100,000 this year, and participation by the new lawyers is key. Let's all get together for this important cause.

If your social life is so fantastic that even exhilarating events like Rock 'n Bowl don't usually make the cut, we're about to make things more interesting. At Rock 'n Bowl 2006, on Saturday, Feb. 18, happy teams of new lawyers will be chatting it up over rented shoes and brightly colored bowling balls with the esteemed members of our local bench. Judges, like the best desserts at your college cafeteria, are first come, first served. Register your teams for Rock 'n Bowl now, and make sure you request a judicial member be added to your team.

Please join us on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 11:30 a.m. at Sawmill Lanes as part of a team or as a corporate sponsor. Each team of five will raise $500 or more for Children's and help celebrate during a two-hour bowling session at Sawmill Lanes. Sawmill Lanes is smoke-free and will be rockin' & rollin' with Wags & Elliott of QFM 96.3.
