DUI law from start to finish

Everything you ever wanted to know about defending a DUI case will be offered by the Municipal Court committee in “Basic DUI—from Start to Finish” on Tuesday, Dec. 5 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for 3.25 hours of CLE credit, including 0.5 hours of substance abuse credit. This is a basic overview of DUI representation for beginning criminal lawyers, attorneys who do not exclusively practice criminal law or for other practitioners interested in DUI representation.

Jon J. Saia and Dominic L. Mango of Saia & Piatt will talk about the initial DUI representation including the interview process, the five-day hearing, ALS appeal/hearing, pre-trial discovery/investigation and the motion hearing. They will also educate you on all aspects of trying a DUI case, taking you through voir dire, the opening statement, cross-examination techniques, obtaining expert witnesses and closing remarks.

Another component of DUI representation included in this seminar is in-depth examination of substance abuse to promote understanding of the problem behind DUI. Scott R. Mote, executive director of Ohio Lawyers Assistance Program, will cover all aspects of the addiction problem associated with DUI including definitions of addiction; primary classification of substances; the disease concept of addiction; treatment objectives, avoiding treatment, and promoting recovery; and OLAP’s support system for lawyers.
