You Be the Judge!
The annual Ohio High School Mock Trial 2013 competition, district and regional, is looking for attorneys to serve as judges.
Summary of this year's case: A school building is burned down in what appears to be arson, resulting in the death of a maintenance worker. After the fire, there is little evidence of the perpetrators. The accused is a high school student whose parents consent to a police interview. During seven hours of questioning, the police drive the defendant past the scene of the crime, the victim’s home, and use various other interrogation techniques. Late in the day, the defendant claims responsibility for the crime and is charged with murder and arson. The defendant later recants his statement.

Nearly $2,500 Raised for "Open Books, Open Minds"
With the generous support of Columbus Bar members and CLE attendees, our 2012 "Open Books, Open Minds" December raffles raised nearly $2,500 to purchase books and DVDs for the library at the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center. In addition, all the young people who were in the Detention Center over the holidays were able to pick their favorite book as a gift.
Thank you so much to everyone who participated!

13 New Year's Resolutions for Improving Client Service
1) I will spend more time in 2013 looking at the relationships I have with my clients from their perspective.
2) I will make a real effort to understand that most clients care about results, not the time I spent on the road to the result. Good results are worth more to clients than bad results.
3) I will experiment with something new this year to see if the "buzz" is warranted instead of merely dismissing the idea because it's not the way I do things.

Retirement of Two Judges First of Many
Two of the most-experienced judges on the Franklin County bench retired this month, and their departures mark the start of a wave of retirements that will change the face of the judiciary this decade.
Common Pleas Judges John F. Bender and John P. Bessey are the first of 11 judges who must step down over the next six years because of age restrictions.
