Coming Soon to the CBA:

The Columbus Bar Association is pleased to announce the formation of a new affiliate, Columbus Bar Interpreting Services (CBIS).

Scheduled to launch in early December, CBIS will be a resource for area courts, attorneys, and other law-related agencies in need of Supreme Court of Ohio Certified and Provisionally Certified Court Interpreters.

CBIS was established to help the legal community comply with Supreme Court of Ohio Rule 88 which takes effect January 1, 2013, and which requires that a Supreme Court of Ohio certified court interpreter be appointed whenever a party to or witness in a legal proceeding cannot readily understand or communicate because of a hearing, speech, or other impairment.

For more information about CBIS, please contact Shirley Coressel at 614/340.2075 or shirley@cbalaw.org.

Next year Ohio courts will be required to use a certified foreign language or sign language interpreter, when available, to ensure the "meaningful participation" of deaf and limited English proficient individuals in court proceedings.
