Supreme Court Update CLE, April 8

Chief Justice John Roberts has been at the helm of the U. S Supreme Court for five years. During that time, three new Associate Justices have joined him on the Bench. This followed a period when the Court had the same nine Justices for eleven years – 1994 to 2005.

Major General William K. Suter, Clerk of the Supreme Court of the United States, and Judge Edmund A. Sargus Jr., United States District Court, Southern District of Ohio, are the presenters on April 8 for a 2.0 CLE hour seminar: U.S. Supreme Court: Roberts Court After 5 Years.

They will review Supreme Court decisions in the areas of free speech (Morse v. Frederick and Citizens United v. FEC), criminal law (Illinois v. Caballes, Maryland v. Shatzer and Herring v. U.S.), second amendment (D.C. v. Heller and McDonald v. Chicago), and the commerce clause (Wickard v. Filburn, U.S. v. Lopez, U.S. v. Morrison and Virginia v. Sebelius).

March is Women's History Month

"Women in America" Report Released

The White House kicked off Women’s History month with a report on the status of women in America. Download the full report from the White House (PDF).

Current Ohio Supreme Court Bench Represents Third Female Majority

There’s no denying that 2011 ushered in a historic period for women on the Supreme Court of Ohio. The New Year saw Maureen O’Connor become the first woman Chief Justice in the 208-year history of the Supreme Court and Yvette McGee Brown become the first African-American woman Justice. But those facts only tell part of the story.
