Description:

What are implicit biases? They are attitudes and stereotypes that we are unaware of but still affect our behavior according to Professor Jerry Kang, a nationally recognized legal expert on implicit bias and the law. Prof. Kang will provide a scientific exploration of how these subtle biases can influence hiring, social interactions and evaluations in organizations in ways that undermine productivity, teamwork, and a basic sense of fairness. He will be joined by Cheryl Staats, lead author of the Kirwan Institute’s State of the Science Implicit Bias Review and thus an expert in the field, in a CLE presentation on March 6 from 3:00-5:00pm at the Columbus Bar. Both will discuss how a more creative, nuanced, and comprehensive approach to understanding inclusion can help drive real change.

This ground-breaking seminar is presented by the Columbus Bar Managing Partners Diversity Initiative as one program in the Thought Leadership Series with a goal of providing tools and concepts to assist law firm management in creating a truly interwoven and inclusive environment that effectively uses the talents of all its members. Who should attend? According to Kurtis Tunnell, managing partner at Bricker and Eckler and chair of the MPDI Advisory Committee, all law firm and legal organization leadership will find the seminar worth attending - managing partners, recruiting, mentor/training, professional/staff development and human resources leads.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to learn from local and national experts. The Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity is led by Executive Director Sharon L. Davies, and the Gregory H. Williams Chair in Civil Rights & Civil Liberties, Michael E. Moritz College of Law, at The Ohio State University. The Institute is known and respected nationally and deeply engaged locally. Prof. Kang is a leading scholar on implicit bias and the law, having published more than a dozen articles on the subject in journals including the Harvard Law Review. He is widely sought after as speaker having addressed Businesses and Associations (ABA Board of Governors, American Bar Foundation, Association of General Counsels, Leadership Council on Legal Diversity, NAPABA, National Association of Women Lawyers, Southern California Edison, Writers’ Guild of America, Walmart); Law Firms (Irell & Manella, Katten Muchin, K&L Gates, Kirkland & Ellis, Lane Powell, Latham and Watkins, O’Melveny & Myers, Reed Smith, Sheppard Mullin,); Judges & Government Oranizations (CT Judiciary, DE Judiciary, National Association of Women Judges, Northern District of California Federal Judicial Conference).
